This article explores benefits screening, a system of auditing patients to identify those
living in poverty and the benefits they may be eligible for, as an innovative step towards realizing the right to health in Canada by advancing health equity. In particular, it assesses one online tool developed by Prosper Canada, the St. Michael’s Hospital Academic Family Health Team, Flemingdon Health Centre, and the Inner City Family Health Team. To date, the tool has been piloted in Toronto at health centres with large numbers of low-income patients with complex health needs.
